Does nutritional supplementation also help improve vaccination coverage?

Summary & Key Points

"Does access to nutritional supplementation aimed at preventing child malnutrition also improve vaccination coverage for these children in Sub-Saharan Africa?"

Does access to nutritional supplementation to prevent child malnutrition also improve the vaccination coverage of these children in Sub-Saharan Africa? Methodological considerations on the most suitable study design for humanitarian crisis contexts.

The GHiGS team (Inserm/IRD/University of Bordeaux) has been collaborating for 8 years with the humanitarian NGO ALIMA and the PAC-CI research program in Abidjan to co-develop clinical research projects aimed at improving maternal and child health during humanitarian crises. One of the avenues of work involves breaking down vertical programs to adopt a more holistic approach to health, creating synergies between these different programs.

While the operational implementation of childhood vaccination remains a major public health challenge in many decentralized African areas, we believe that Small-Quantity Lipid-Based Nutritional Supplements (SQ-LNS) could be an innovative clinical solution to encourage vaccination while preventing acute malnutrition in African children.

In this webinar, Renaud Becquet outlines these challenges and, in particular, methodological considerations on the most suitable study design for humanitarian crisis contexts (individual randomization, classic cluster, or step-wedge cluster), highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each. This presentation also serves as an opportunity to emphasize the critical role of scientific engineering in the success of research projects led by the GHiGS team, following the model of the Franco-Ivorian PRISME-CI platform.
