Did you know?

PAC-CI has been actively involved in the fight against opportunistic infections from the very beginning

From its inception, the PAC-CI Program has tackled a major public health issue: the fight against opportunistic infections in people living with HIV.

Opportunistic infections are diseases that occur more easily when the immune system is weakened. In the case of HIV, they posed a particularly serious threat to patients in the 1990s, especially in a context where antiretroviral treatments were still poorly accessible in sub-Saharan Africa.

Given this situation, a crucial question arose: how to better protect people living with HIV from these serious diseases, even as therapeutic options remained limited?

It was in this context that PAC-CI conducted a major trial in Côte d'Ivoire: the COTRIMO CI trial. This study is among the first major research efforts that contributed to establishing the Program's reputation in the health field.

Through this trial, PAC-CI contributed to finding concrete solutions to improve the care of the most vulnerable patients.

In our next article, discover what the COTRIMO trial demonstrated and how its results marked a turning point in the prevention of opportunistic infections.
