Did you know?
PAC-CI took early action against opportunistic infections
From the outset, the PAC-CI Programme tackled a major public health challenge: combating opportunistic infections in people living with HIV.
Opportunistic infections are diseases that occur more easily when the immune system is weakened. In the case of HIV, they posed a particularly serious threat to patients in the 1990s, especially in a context where antiretroviral treatments were still largely inaccessible in sub-Saharan Africa.
Faced with this situation, a key question arose: how could people living with HIV be better protected against these serious illnesses, at a time when therapeutic options remained limited?
It was in this context that PAC-CI conducted a major trial in Côte d’Ivoire: the COTRIMO CI trial. This study is among the first major research projects that helped establish the Programme’s reputation in the health field.
Through this trial, PAC-CI contributed to the search for practical solutions to improve care for the most vulnerable patients.
In our next article, find out what the COTRIMO trial demonstrated and how its results marked a turning point in the prevention of opportunistic infections.
